This RTI wants to ask questions to highlight the inefficiency in Masters program admission process which is mostly happening in the Indian Institutes of Technology. GATE exam has been centralized but the admission process still gives individual IITs power to define their own admission process and dates of proceedings. This is having profound impact on applicants as they are not able to find the colleges according to their performance. 1. Does IITs co-ordinate to set their dates of post-GATE admission formalities sucha as on-campus exams, interviews etc. - I ask this because today applicants face difficulties when different institutes have same dates for the processes. 2. What happens when applicants enroll in more than one institute. - I ask this because due to date clashes, applicants appear in several institutes and play safe by taking admission in more than one institutes. This happens because their dream institute starts admission later than others. 3. Some IITs eg. IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi shortlist applicants on the basis of GATE ranks. Other IITs relax the criteria of GATE rank very much and invite a bigger crowd in their campus to participate in rigorous exams and interviews at their campus which are extremely similar to GATE exam. Eg. IIT Roorkee invited around 1000 applicants on campus and gave admission according to ranks where last applicant who got in had around 120 rank (This rank is according to IIT Roorkee who apply there. And this is particularly the case of Computer Science Department M.Tech program). This is a huge inconvenience, waste of time and resources. 4. Some IITs offer to fill up the vacant seats in the first week of commencement of classes. To do this they do not go through their admission process. Question is what procedure they follow. - I ask this because when top GATE rankers (less than 200 rank) take admission in more than one colleges, they are bound to drop out of others but a single college. This create huge number of vacant seats. Some institutes follow First Come First Serve basis to fill up those seats which is not justified as it leaves an opportunity of human intervention in the process. I have experienced the GATE admission process for nearly 5 years and realized that many students are not getting in the right institutes inspite of achieving good ranks. This has to stop and serious thoughts should be given to centralized counseling based on GATE exam for admission in IITs for Masters program. |
